This week’s invitation is to UNPLUG.
Last weekend I set a personal boundary to stay off of my phone. On day one I found it to be quite difficult since I use some of the apps on my phone for long runs (routing, tracking, photos), guided meditations, and using GPS. On day two, I decided to put my phone on airplane mode and use downloaded data instead.
When I put my phone on airplane mode, a couple things happened. First, I was able to pick up my phone without seeing any notifications, nor feeling pressure to respond. It was a way for me to truly unplug but still use the device to supplement my lifestyle. Next and more important, I started to feel more at ease. I even woke up on Monday (today!) feeling more calm, peaceful, and restored.
There a lot of benefits to unplugging or even minimizing the amount of time we’re on our devices. Here are some ways to incorporate this into your routine this week:
1 - Go on airplane mode for any amount of time that feels good to you (perhaps it’s 30 minutes once a day, or maybe you can go for an entire day).
Download any media you want to use beforehand. Google drive allows you to set documents to “work offline”, for example.
2 - Go social media-free for a day (or set a timer/pay attention to time when you are using the apps
3 - If your work is online - try working offline before you move online. For example, if some of your work involves writing, write in your notes on your computer before opening up any tabs/emails/platforms, etc. Minimize distraction as much as possible to give yourself more clarity.
4 - Read instead of watching TV - for 30 minutes, an evening, or all week. Do what feels good to you (are you sensing a theme here?!)
5 - Find a recipe in a cookbook instead of using your phone or computer
Let us know in the comments how you’re unplugging this week or what you’ve found works well for you.
Wishing you all well this week from a campsite in Florida -
