096 | Create the Environment to Thrive 07/07/2025

I started running just over 16 years ago. My first run was 0.25 miles - I ran around the block of my apartment complex. It took about 5 minutes and when I was done, I couldn't possibly do more.

Slowly, but surely, and certainly with the support of a community, I incrementally started to run farther. Eventually, completing a half marathon later that same year. 

I had a lot to learn about not only running, but the habits that would ensure I succeeded in honoring the training commitments that I wanted to keep. 

Fast forward to today - I am currently training for a trail 100k race in December. I love running, I do very well with training when I’m signed up for a race, and I know how good I feel when I train. 

And it’s still sometimes hard to get out the door. 

Some of the same mental gymnastics occur to help keep me comfortable and at-home on the couch (and, don’t get me wrong, there is definitely a time and place for relaxing at home on the couch). 

But what I’ve learned over the years, specifically to running that apply to all other areas of wellness (and life!), is that

... when my environment supports the habits I want to create, the resistance melts away. 

Sixteen years into running while being dedicated to a current training program, here's what I always do the night before a run:

✨ Set out my workout clothes

✨ Set out my post-running work clothes

✨ Prep all my gear: hydration belt, water bottle, fuel, hat, sweat scarf in the summer/fleece gaiter in the winter

✨ Prep my coffee & pre-run breakfast (usually a hardboiled egg and overnight oats).

I create the environment that I need to thrive.
